Challenge
Every bike owner is confronted with the challenge of securing their bike. In Denmark alone, more than 67.000 bikes are stolen every year. Cities, insurance companies and bikeowners struggle to resolve this problem in the face of monetary loss, and the simple aggravation of bike theft.
Solution
In Copenhagen, the company See-Mi just launched a pilot project that utilizes RFID technology to curb and track bicycle theft. With the See-mi concept, bike-owners now have the tools to find their stolen bikes. By mounting an RFID tag to the reflector on the the bike and registering the bike in a central registry, bike owners can track their rides. If a registered bike is stolen, bike owners simply report back to the See-Mi registry. When specially designed RFID scanners scan the bikes in the city daily, See-Mi can track scanned tags against the stolen bike tags. If a stolen bike is found, the bike location is reported back to the registry and the bikeowner receives an SMS detailing the location of their bike.
Results
To date, 1900 reflectors have been distributed in Copenhagen. Within this short window of time, 17 bikes have been stolen already and 25 tags have been located by the scanners. System operation is functioning without complications and new results are regularly released.
