Challenge
Air pollution and noise are two of the most important factors affecting the quality of life and the health of the increasingly urban population. They are highly location dependent and yet , there is not enough data gathered to evaluate environmental stress in a given neighborhood and therefore the publicly available information is scarce.
Solution
City Senspods are Bluetooth enabled sensors providing air quality, noise, temperature, light and other information pertaining to environmental stress. The data is either stored on memory cards or sent in real time to a distant server via mobile phones for dynamic mapping using web 2.0 services such as Google Maps or Microsoft Virtual Earth.
When riding bicycles, dynamos recharge sensors and/or mobile phones as people pedal.
Results
Citizens can get a deeper understanding of their city dynamics and contribute to mapping data for improved urban planning.
Target Markets
Cities with existing public bicycle sharing programs in place wanting to use the bicycle network as a monitoring and mapping base for air quality, noise, urban heat islands, street light intensity mapping, etc.
Companies involved in urban furniture can also install City Senspods on advertising billboards, bus shelters/stops or information kiosks as a differentiating factor.
