A digital city network will boost data transfer application with the implementation of ultra fast fiber and mobile networks

Challenge

Deutsche Telekom is investing 80mv to create the first digital city in Friedrichshafen which will give ist citizens access to hi-speed digital services of the future. New fiber optic cables (V-DSL) will be installed citywide and the new mobile data transfer technology HSDPA (High Speed Downlink Packet Access) with a bandwith of up to 7.2 megabit per second (Mbit/s) will boost mobile communication application potentials.

Solution

Such technology will not only allow mobile access to audio and videofiles (see Podcast University example) as mStudent application but also also give light to mobile radio transission based real time traffic information which is designed to manage traffic flows more efficiently, thus optimizing the usage of existing road networks.

Results

The following projects are planned to be conducted during the next months: a) T-Home-Entertainment will allow new “a la carte” access to audi and videostreaming b) The SMS portal Friedrichshafen will transfer T-City-News to T-City project employees to test the portal and in the future every citizen will be able to receive relevant city information via SMS c) mHealth: A mobile measuring device will enable patients at home to transfer vital data to doctors and or hospitals. A mobile „Visite“ consultation shall enable patients to access medical advice without leaving their home. d) mLearning: The lifelong learning and research project platform called ”Edunex”, shall provide access to education related audio and video files. e) mTicketing: Mobile ticketing shall be enabled for tickets purchased for the catamaran boat connection transfer with the city of Konstanz.
